Chapter 1

March

The March rain pelting the kitchen windows made Rachel think of tears. And there were indeed tears in her eyes as she told JT that their best friends’ marriage was over. The inseparable love birds, Tina and Andy, were the last couple they thought would lose in the marriage roulette. Rachel had also thought that their two young children were another unbreakable bond.

Her husband frowned as he looked up from his poached salmon and asparagus laden plate. “I didn’t even know they were having problems.”

Her temples throbbed. She had been too self-absorbed with her own life and yearning for a baby that she hadn’t noticed any signs or cracks in Tina’s marriage.

Some friend you are, Rachel.

“He was having an affair with a friend of theirs since Justin was born. Tina didn’t suspect a thing…It’s so sad how everything can change so suddenly. Why would a man jeopardize his whole family life like that?”

How fragile life and relationships seemed.

Nervous for all marriages she thanked God for her own strong bond with JT. Despite their issues of unexplained infertility, their marriage was blessed even after seven-and-a-half years.

“I’m sorry to hear this. I’m shocked...but maybe he wasn’t getting what he needed from her—”

“What? Tina’s been a great wife and very patient with him all these years.” She felt her anger rise thinking of Tina’s meddling mother-in-law—so much like her own—and Andy’s fledgling music production business, which had ostensibly kept him away from home for days at a time. “It’s disgusting what he’s done.”

“I agree, but no one knows what really goes on behind closed doors.” He sighed, “But there’s never any excuse to screw up a marriage.”

Rachel shook her head. “No, and especially with Emily and Justin....” How would Tina manage with her five-year-old daughter and almost three-year-old son on her own?

He shook his head. “He’s a fool. I’m disappointed for them all.” He glanced at her, his fork half way to his lips, “Don’t worry, Rachel, I know how much you care for her. All you can do is be there for them.” He then put a salmon morsel in his mouth.

“Communication is the most important thing in any marriage, right?”

She felt JT’s eyes bore into hers as he watched her across the narrow mahogany kitchen table. Putting down his cutlery he reached for her hand nearest to him. She adored that sparkle in his gunmetal-grey eyes and that slow smile.

“We’re not like the rest, to do anything stupid and ruin everything.” With a quirked brow his thumb massaged the top of her hand.

Her heart skittered at JT’s deep knowing expression the way it had when they met at a mutual friend’s wedding in London nine-and-a-half years ago. He seemed to always know how to brighten her moods, make her smile, feel safe and whole.

He kept her grounded, focussing on what mattered most; them: them, together.

Rachel would concentrate on her part-time job with Gareth Robinson-Brown’s real estate agency and not drive herself crazy about why she was still not pregnant after five years of trying. She remembered JT’s wise words after their last specialist appointment a couple of months ago to stay patient and positive and not let anyone stress her out. That was why she had given up running her own team in a Central London agency three years ago.

Neither did she get too involved in her younger sister’s private life. Emotionally supporting the twenty-five year-old Abby without getting sucked into the turmoil of her sister’s love life was proving wise and healthier for both sisters. She pushed aside the uneasiness she had felt seven months ago when she had met Rick, the new boyfriend. Abby had seemed happy with a bright ‘I’m in love’ smile at her trendy restaurant in Islington, but the phone calls had petered out over the last couple of months. Rachel resolved to call and see how she was doing.

In the meantime, she would be truly present for Tina. She took in a breath and slowly exhaled and felt a smile play on her lips. “I know you’d never dare stray, because I’d just have to kill you.” She threw him an arch look.

JT grinned. “I’d never want to be with another woman but you, and you know it. And it can work both ways. I’d strangle any guy who even looks at you in that way.” His eyes darkened, his passionate lips thinning into a resolute line on that handsome rugged face, making her smile broaden. “Like your old boyfriend we bumped into... where was that? The French restaurant soon after we met.”

“Brandon.” Her pulse raced for a few seconds and then settled. “It was our second date.”

“Ah, so you still remember the name of that pretty-boy, no-good gigolo.” The twinkling glint in his eyes was warm and inviting. “You’ll have to make up for that, wench.”

“I truly love you, JT. How did I get so lucky?”

He smiled again. “You’re going in the right direction.” He let go of her hand for the moment it took to push his chair back and come and stand beside her. Holding both her hands he raised her left one to his lips. His touch was always simultaneously calming and arousing. He leaned towards her. “Am I reading those sexy brown eyes right? There’s more than one choice for dessert to make up for...”

She licked the corner of her lower lip while he stared at her mouth as if it was a luscious strawberry, his favourite fruit. Especially when served with melted semi-sweet dark chocolate.

“Devil’s food cake and chocolate dipped strawberries.”

His lips slowly gravitated towards her mouth.

Even after all these years together, Sundays were their full day and night for each other and no one else. Their routine became a variation of sharing a long shower or an indulgent hot soak in the tub before dinner.

Before long they lay in each other’s arms against the soft cushions on the large Persian rug. The large fire in the regal fireplace shed heat and golden light over their naked skin and the plush cream throw. The intermittent crackling of the flames accompanied Nora Jones in the background. The light banter between them changed as JT gently placed Rachel’s empty wine glass on the sofa table beside the plate with the single remaining chocolate-dipped strawberry.

He leaned closer. “I’ll make you forget everything and everyone tonight.” JT murmured low, nuzzling his lips against her ear and migrating to her other sensitive erogenous zones. Almost purring, she lay back welcoming his explorations. Her arms encompassed his broad shoulders. She closed her eyes and counted her lucky stars. Everything would work out, even filling the nursery with their gorgeous, healthy baby. Pushing the thought out by letting the languid feelings of their intimacy flood her mind, she gave herself over completely to the bliss.

“I’ll always adore you.” He groaned, inhaling into her throat. Her pulse and heart beats quickened as he explored her skin and his lips hovered so close to hers. “Don’t ever doubt it.”

“I know. I—I love you, too.” Shivers of anticipation made her voice shake. Then they were kissing, hungry and sated at the same time. As always, his touch and sure kisses covering her tingling skin melted her insides.

Lightly, her shaking fingertips traced a butterfly-light line from his neck to his shoulders. His hard biceps stiffened at her caress. She loved his strong physique. Running impatient fingers through his thick silky hair she directed his head lower and kissed him deeper. She was home, warm and stimulated, marvelling how neither tired of making love with each other despite their pressures. His work and her constant hopes for a baby.

Almost of their own volition, her hands roved down his straining back muscles, as her legs tightened around his taut buttocks and hips to meld even closer into each other.

Everything outside their circle vanished. Well, almost everything.

✯REVIEW & EXCERPT TOUR!✯ Blood Type by K.A. Linde

Blood Type by K.A. Linde

Release Date: April 24th 2018 by Loveswept
Series: Blood Type #1
Genres: Romance, Paranormal

A startling new vision of paranormal romance: When a human ventures into the world of vampires—a decadent milieu of blood-bonds and betrayal—she discovers that not all is what it seems.

For Reyna Carpenter, giving up her body isn’t a choice. It’s survival.

In a civilization laid waste by poverty and desperation, Reyna accepts a high-paying position with the wealthy and hungry vampire elite. Her new job is as the live-in blood escort for the intimidating, demanding, and devilishly handsome Beckham Anderson. He’s everything she expected from a vampire, except for one thing—he won’t feed off her.

Reyna soon discovers that behind Beckham’s brooding, wicked faรงade lies a unique and complex man. And that, in a dark and divided world, she is more valuable than she ever would have believed.

For with each passing night, Reyna can’t shake the sensation that it’s Beckham who’s afraid of her.

Note: Reyna and Beckham’s story continues in Blood Match.

My Review:

Having read Linde’s more contemporary romance books before, I didn’t know what to expect of Blood Type, but I was impressed with with the overall story. Being the first book in the Blood Type series, we are introduced to the main characters Reyna Carpenter and Beckham Anderson as they go through a series of events to be together.

Now this was a very interesting read, the setting itself was different from any other book that I’ve read in the past and for that I applaud the author for taking the setting outside the box. This book is set in a dystopian world where vampires co-exist with humans, yet they are ones who hold the ultimate power.

At the beginning of the book we get to meet twenty-one-year old Reyna Carpenter, as she makes her way to the hospital facility of Visage Incorporated. The company is the largest in the world and it specializes in what they call body employment services (who Reyna calls blood escorts). These individuals who are in need of money will in some cases visit Visage to become blood donors for vampires.

In this world there are various districts where the economy is really bad and technology is not advanced. Reyna happens to live in The Warehouse District where any technology from cellphones to cars weren’t available to most people. It is for this case that Reyna has taken upon herself to provide for her brothers any way she can and that’s how she decides to become a blood escort. But she is offered to be in a new program, one where she will be staying with the sponsor permanently and that’s when the story truly takes off. Her sponsor is non other than Beckham Anderson, Senior Vice President of Visage Incorporated and as the two start to get to know each other the more she starts to like him. Yet, there are matters that could get complicated and a new law is about to threaten any kind of future they might to have with each other.

As VP of Visage Incorporated, Beckham Anderson enjoys its advantages and he is more than willing to take on a blood escort. But never expected to meet Reyna and like her. She is not just any blood donor to him, and he soon starts to do little things to make her happy while she is living in his penthouse. Though their sexual chemistry is there, he refuses to give up control and will not feed off her either. As they spend more time together, there more he wants to be with her but there is a new law that could end up pulling them apart.

I wish the story didn’t end with a cliffhanger, but it does and from the ending it looks like the second book is going to be great as well. The characters are total opposites who somehow work together really well. Reyna is determined to get any job in order to provide for her family even if it means risking her life/freedom. On the other hand, Beckham is more mysterious and keeps to himself a lot. There are little things that he does for Reyna that charmed her and she felt comfortable around him pretty quickly. We do get to find out why they’re the way they are as we get to learn more about their pasts. The ending had me freaking out, I really want to read the next book already! What I didn’t like as much was how easily Beck kept playing with Reyna’s feelings and how many chances she gave him. It was frustrating at times, but it somehow worked at the end of the book. If there is one thing that I thought of when I finished reading the book was of the movie, Daybreakers, it has a similar plot line minus all the romance. I really enjoyed reading something different from K.A. Linde, it was a good start to the series which I highly recommend checking out! :D

That was the moment Beckham appeared in the doorway like a storm cloud.

Reyna straightened in her seat at the expression on his face. He walked across the room like a tightly coiled spring ready to explode.

“Ah Beckham, there you are,” Harrington said.

“Excuse me, William. I need to speak with Reyna. Alone.”

She hastened out of her seat and followed him around the corner. He tugged her straight through the kitchens, out the back door, down a corridor, and into a dead end. Then her back was slammed against the brick wall. His fist connected with the wall behind her, and she felt the wall shudder. Debris floated onto her shoulders.

“You left,” he growled.

“I . . .”

“No.” He pressed his finger to her lips roughly. She stopped breathing and just stared up into his eyes as dark as night. Her body trembled under the feral stare. “You left without me.”

The silence was weighted. All she could do was sit with their bodies nearly touching. His finger on her mouth. Her mind wandering to hellacious places.

“You are my subject. Can you imagine what it was like when I found you missing? When you turned up with three of my kind?” She shook her head minutely. He bared his teeth to her, and she shrank back. “These are meant to drink your blood. To drink you dry until there is nothing left of your body but a dry corpse. We are killers. We don’t hesitate. Just because we’re wearing suits and seem more like you . . . does not mean we are like you. We are not like you. They especially are not like you. The only way you get to the top of Visage is to be fucking ruthless, Reyna. Do you understand?”

“You’re . . . scaring me,” she whispered.

“Good.”

{EXCERPT}

10 years earlier …

I should have known that something bad was going to happen, but at only six years old, I didn’t know how to put my feelings into words. At least, not those feelings. How was I supposed to tell mommy that something dark was following us; that I could feel its eyes on me while its hungry breath fogged up the window? I knew she wouldn’t understand, outside it was anything but dark. The sun was shining clear and bright and laughter trickled in from the barbeque next door. Why would she believe me, a kid, when what I felt was not reflected around us?

I should have told her anyway. I should have screamed it until she listened, because, as it turned out, she knew the darkness was there too.

Looking back, all the signs were there—blatantly so. It was a Sunday, the day that my mom always took me to the park. I loved those days. She would always have a new adventure planned for us: catching butterflies that we’d pretend were fairies or climbing trees that she made me believe were the tallest mountains.

But not that Sunday. I thought it was weird that she didn’t want to go outside, mommy loved being out with the trees, but I didn’t argue. I had my own reasons for not wanting to go out. And it wasn’t too bad in the house; true to form, mommy tried to play the night out like it was just another adventure.

“We’re really in a secret cave hunting for lost treasure,” she said.

She led me all around the house, making obstacles out of the furniture until we made it to the “treasure”—a fresh baked batch of brownies. The whole time I thought it was just a new game. It was my naivety that kept me from seeing how my mother moved a kitchen knife from its drawer to the counter, or how all the “obstacles” looked strategically placed.

I couldn’t tell then, but now it’s all too clear; she knew that something was coming. Or someone.

They came late in the night. We were halfway through The Lion King when there was a knock at the door. My mom turned off the movie and instantly knelt in front of me to quiet my cries of dismay. There was no explanation for why the movie was gone; she had no chance to give one. The knock at the door swiftly turned violent, with more blows sounding on the back door and surrounding windows.

I was ushered into the dark crevice where our couch met the wall. Almost too big to fit, I managed to squeeze in just as she ran to the kitchen and grabbed the knife. I heard her yell frantically into her phone as the harsh pounding became so vehement that it felt as if the whole house shook. Whether it’s because I was too young or unintentionally blocked it out, I can only remember bits and pieces of what she said.

“Eli, they’re here! Help! ... 120 Huckleberry …”

At one point I heard a splintering crack as one of the doors started to break. I crawled further into the crevice as my mom spoke faster.

“… not enough time! ... I’m so sorry. Take care of her.”

I never saw what happened next, but I remember every sound: the high pitch of our glass windows shattering, the harsh moan and crack as the already fragmented door gave way, followed closely by my mom’s scream. And I heard what I now recognize as the sound of a fight. I sometimes dream that my mom won that fight and came to get me and everything was okay. But that’s not how it happened.

The fighting ended in an eerie silence. I almost crawled out of my hiding spot, but even my undeveloped instincts could tell that I wasn’t alone. Whoever was still there was looking for something. Before I knew it, it was silent yet again, but this time it was real. This time, it was forever.

Royally Screwed

“Would you like to have coffee sometime, Olivia? With me?”

“I don’t like coffee. Never touch the stuff.”

My eyes roll over the room. “You work in a coffee house.”

“Exactly.”

I nod. “Hmm, I see your point. It’ll have to be dinner, then. Are you available this evening? I could pick you up on our way back.”

She gives a jumpy laugh. “I thought you didn’t have time for”—she makes air quotes with her fingers—‘wooing’?”

“Some things are worth making time for.”

That catches her off guard, making her words stumble. “Well I… don’t… date.”

“Good God, why not?” I ask, horrified. “You’re stunning, obviously clever— you should date often, and preferably with a man who knows how it’s done.” I rest my palm on my chest.

“Coincidentally, I happen to be fantastic at it. What are the odds?”

She slammed the shot glass on the counter and wiped a sweaty hand across her face, hard. No doubt her face was now covered in smeared mascara. “Mother, I’m not going to Italy. I have lots of very important work to do here if I plan on paying my own rent next month, let alone yours.”

“I told you, sweetie, I don’t need rent, I just…”

Hazel hung up swiftly and dropped her phone. Her stomach was a roiling sea, churning up the half-digested Snickers bar she had eaten for breakfast that morning. Probably not the best choice, but she’d been in a hurry. As she raced toward the back of the bar, she spotted a door with a ladies sign on it and charged through. It took about as long for the Snickers to come up as it had to go down, which was not long at all.

Hazel sat, dirty and shivering on the greasy tiles with her arm thrown over the toilet as though it were an old pal. She loved this toilet. It was cold and very close to her. It would never desert her. Granted, she would need about five showers before she ever felt clean again, but the icy porcelain on her head at this moment was worth the risk of cholera, or whatever horrible disease one could get from disgusting toilets.

But she couldn’t stay here forever. She couldn’t stay here, and she couldn’t go to Italy, and she couldn’t go back to work. She started to feel teary again, the vodka that remained in her stomach was making her head spin and her sadness swell. She was sad, this was sad. She couldn’t sit in a dive bar bathroom with a toilet as her best pal for the rest of the day. She had to take action. She had to figure out what to do next. But right now her fuzzy mind wasn’t cooperating. She needed five showers. She needed a plan. She needed $20,000 for the equity buy-in because she couldn’t lose this partnership. Samuel was guaranteed to screw up the project, then Liz would do her magic, and Blackwell & Crawley would offer her the partnership! Right?

She turned to her best porcelain pal for approval, and suddenly there were two of them bouncing up and down in front of her. They must be nodding.

AUTHOR BIO:

Lisa-Marie has a weird accent - it's kind of English, with some Jersey twang and Scottish slang thrown in. That happens when you're born in England, move to NJ as a teenager and marry a sexy Scotsman.

If you like to read breezy, fun books that you can't put down then she'd love it if you'd read her books and then emailed her with questions, ideas or insults. You can reach her at: lisa@laptoplifelisa.com

She travels a lot. You'll find most of her favorite locations popping up in her books. She's struggling with some serious empty nest syndrome since her daughter flew the nest, which is why she fosters lots of kittens. It doesn't help much.
